In this post, I’ll look at: Under the ISO rules, its national standards bodies are free to develop national variations of ISO 26000 for the sole purpose of offering certification – and many are. The latest example is the Danish standard DS 26001, where the title is obviously designed to link the product with ISO 26000. These national standards have two main problems. ISO 26000 only addresses shareholders once in their rights to bring up social issues as shareholders and demand a business change its practices or policies. Never does it address the potential problem of business owners or stock holders being outvoted by people who neither work for nor own shares of the company. ISO 26000:2010 is an international standard that provides guidance on the underlying principles of social responsibility, the core subjects and issues pertaining to social responsibility and on ways to integrate socially responsible behavior into the organization. As a guidance document the ISO 26000 is an offer, voluntary in use, and encourages organizations to discuss their social responsibility issues and possible actions with relevant stakeholders.

ISO 26000 was created by a diverse group of experts, representing many different countries, stakeholder groups 1, and points of view. Work began in 2005 and was completed in 2010. Creation of the standard was organized by the International Standardization Organization, ISO, based in Geneva Switzerland. The first concerns political and civil rights such as the right to life, freedom, equality; the second refers to economic, social and cultural rights such as the right to work, food, health, education and social security. Core subjects comprise a number of issues, but it is each organization's responsibility to identify issues are relevant and significant to their stakeholders and/or need to be addressed. The seven core subjects are explained in Clause 6 of the ISO 26000 standard.

ISO 26000 represents a guidance on corporate social responsibility and it is, at the present time, one of the most important document on CSR in the world.
